Why Does California Have a Smog Check Program?

Smog checks were introduced in the 1970s as part of the Clean Air Act. Smog checks are mandatory in California due to the high number of registered vehicles in the state.

Smog checks are required for many CA vehicles, including:

  • Most vehicles manufactured after 1997
  • Diesel vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight (GVWR) less than 14,000 lbs
  • Natural gas powered vehicles less than 14,000 lbs

Regular emissions testing reduces excessive smog, keeps pollutants out of the air, and contributes to a healthier state.

What Happens During a Smog Check?

During a smog check, a licensed technician tests your exhaust system to make sure it doesn't emit too many pollutants (smog) into the environment. Using a special emissions testing tool that also connects to the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR), the technician measures the amount of emissions your vehicle produces and compares this amount to legal standard.

When testing completes, results are electronically sent to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and we provide you with a Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR). We advise keeping the VIR as part of your records.
